Tour description: Coloured Canyon Salama: 5-in-1

Coloured Canyon Salama is one of the most unusual natural sites on the Sinai Peninsula. Millions of years ago this was the bed of an ancient sea. When the waters retreated, they carved winding passages through the soft rock, leaving multicoloured walls: pink, yellow, red, violet, grey - the colours shift from one metre to the next. Walking through a canyon whose walls sometimes close overhead is a completely extraordinary sensation.

The 5-in-1 format makes this tour exceptional: a canyon of coloured rock faces, a camel ride along the Red Sea shore, snorkelling in turquoise water at coral reefs, quad biking through the desert, and lunch at a coastal café. Five utterly different experiences in a single day. The tour is popular with families with teenagers, active couples, and anyone who wants to try something new rather than simply lying on the beach.

Closed shoes are required. Bring swimwear, a towel, and sunscreen. Quad bikes: minimum age 10.

For all group tours, a white Toyota minibus picks up guests - round-trip hotel transfer is included in the price.

A wonderfully packed day - there's a huge amount to do in a single outing. The canyon looks extraordinary; the rock colours really do surprise you. Some passages are narrow, which actually adds to the thrill. I liked having several different activities, not just a walk. Riding, snorkelling, the sea - all in one. An ideal choice if you don't like sitting still. Altogether a very varied day out.

If you want something active and out of the ordinary, this is the right choice. The canyon is beautiful, especially for photography. I appreciated the variety in the programme - it doesn't feel repetitive. It was a bit hot and tiring by the end of the day, but the impressions more than made up for it. Organisation was smooth, no issues. Everything moves at a good pace. We loved it.

This was the best day in Egypt - I simply hadn't expected nature to be quite like this. The canyon is stunning: pink, yellow, orange walls - you look and can't quite believe it's real. The kids were absolutely beside themselves, scrambling over rocks and posing in every crevice. Our guide explained everything brilliantly - why the colours exist, how the rock layers formed. Transfer on time, flawless organisation. I'd recommend this to anyone visiting Sharm.

The 5-in-1 format fully delivered on its promise. In one day we saw so much variety - the canyon, a Bedouin camp, the desert. Every stop had something different to offer. The canyon was the real highlight - you genuinely lose your bearings in there; the walls close in overhead and create something almost magical. The group was small, no crowding. I left very happy.

More about this tour

Coloured Canyon Salama is a place that astonishes with its sheer unreality. This canyon in the south-eastern part of the Sinai Peninsula formed millions of years ago on the bed of an ancient sea. When the waters retreated, they left behind rocks dyed in extraordinary shades - red, pink, yellow, violet, grey - all interwoven in abstract patterns across the walls of a gorge just a few metres wide. Walking through it is like stepping inside an abstract painting.

The tour's greatest appeal, however, is its 5-in-1 format. In one packed day you experience several completely different things. First, the canyon with its coloured walls and narrow passages. Then a camel ride along the Red Sea shore - quite unlike riding camels at the pyramids. After that, snorkelling in clear water at coral reefs, where fish swim literally at your feet. Quad biking through the desert provides speed and adrenaline. And to finish, lunch at a welcoming coastal café with sea views.

This tour is especially well suited to those who want to experience the full range of what Sinai has to offer in a single day. Desert, sea, activity, nature - all in one itinerary. Popular with families with teenagers, active couples, and anyone who prefers doing over merely watching.

Best time to visit

Coloured Canyon is beautiful at any time of year, though summer can be very hot - bring plenty of water. The best time for photography in the canyon is the morning, when the light is softer. Snorkelling is best from April to October, when the water is warmer.

Practical information

Bring swimwear and a towel for snorkelling. Mask and fins are available to hire on site ($5 per item). Closed shoes are essential in the canyon - sandals won't do. Hat, sunscreen, and a keffiyeh scarf to protect against dust when quad biking. Minimum age for quad bikes is 15.
