Tour description: Ancient City of Petra (Jordan)

Petra is one of those rare places that leaves even seasoned travellers completely speechless. This ancient Nabataean city - carved directly into the rose-red sandstone cliffs of the Jordanian desert around 2,000 years ago - was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. Anyone who has been there understands exactly why.

The journey begins at night from Sharm El Sheikh: a drive to the border, ferry crossing of the Gulf of Aqaba, arrival in Jordan. In the morning you enter Petra through the Siq - a narrow canyon where the cliff walls tower overhead, and after roughly 20 minutes on foot the 43-metre façade of Al-Khazneh (the Treasury) appears without warning. Travellers consistently call this the most powerful single moment of their lives. Beyond the Treasury lie the Royal Tombs, the colonnaded street, the amphitheatre, and the broader ruined city. Afterwards, a detour to the Wadi Rum valley and its otherworldly red desert landscape.

A Sinai entry stamp is sufficient for the Jordanian visa - no Egyptian visa required. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. The tour runs for approximately 24 hours in total.

For group tours a white Toyota minibus picks you up - round-trip hotel transfer is included in the price.

⚠️ Important: Departures run Tuesday night (arriving Wednesday) or Friday night (arriving Saturday). Passport photos must be submitted in advance. No Egyptian visa required for Jordan via Aqaba - a Sinai entry stamp is sufficient.
🎒 What to bring: Passport, travel insurance, water, a snack or lunchbox, warm clothing for the overnight journey, comfortable walking shoes, a sun hat, and cash for personal extras.

Petra has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember - and it didn't just meet expectations, it shattered them completely. Walking through the Siq with the canyon walls closing in overhead, and then suddenly the Treasury appears at the end of the gorge - that first glimpse is the kind of moment that stays with you forever. The scale of everything carved into the rose-red rock is staggering. Our guide brought the Nabataean story to life brilliantly.

I came for the Treasury and the photos. What I didn't expect was how much the whole city would affect me. The Royal Tombs, the colonnaded street, the amphitheatre - it just keeps going. The journey itself - overnight drive, border crossing, ferry across the Gulf of Aqaba - is an adventure in its own right. A long day, but absolutely unforgettable. Worth every minute of lost sleep.

Petra was on my wishlist for many years - and it surpassed every expectation. You walk through the canyon, the walls press in around you, and suddenly the Treasury is right there in front of you - I had goosebumps from head to toe. The scale of the ancient city is breathtaking. Our guide told the story of the Nabataeans so engagingly that you wanted to stay longer. It is a long journey, but this is a day you will never, ever forget.

Petra is not just a sight - it is a different dimension of history altogether. You can only truly understand why it is a Wonder of the World when you are standing in front of the Treasury yourself. No photograph captures either the size or the atmosphere. The guide knew the site deeply and clearly loved it. Physically manageable if you are reasonably fit. Getting there via Aqaba makes the logistics very straightforward. Unreservedly recommended.

More about this tour

Petra is not merely a sight - it is a place that changes people. Walking through the narrow Siq canyon, where sandstone walls close in 80 metres above your head, and then finding the rose-gold façade of the Treasury suddenly towering before you at 43 metres - most people simply lose their breath at that moment. It is one of those rare experiences in life that stays with you permanently.

Petra was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom - a mysterious people who, around 2,000 years ago, built a flourishing trading city directly into the cliffs of the Jordanian desert. The Nabataeans controlled the trade routes between Arabia, Egypt and the Mediterranean, and their wealth allowed them to create architecture of extraordinary beauty and scale. In 1812, Swiss explorer Johann Burckhardt became the first European to set eyes on Petra - until then it had been hidden from the outside world for almost a thousand years.

The journey begins at night from Sharm El Sheikh, heading north via Taba and then by ferry across the Gulf of Aqaba into Jordan. This is an adventure in itself: a night drive under the stars of Sinai, a sea crossing, arrival in a new country. By morning you are in Wadi Musa, at the entrance to Petra. The walk through the Siq takes around 20 minutes, each bend in the path building the anticipation. Then comes the Treasury, the Royal Tombs, the colonnaded street, the amphitheatre. To close the day, the spectacular Wadi Rum valley - the so-called Lunar Valley, a landscape of crimson sandstone that genuinely resembles the surface of Mars.

Best time to visit

The best time for Petra is spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when temperatures are comfortably warm without being overwhelming. Summer can be very hot - around 35–40°C. Winter nights on the road can be quite cold, so pack warm layers. We run tours year-round and adjust the programme for the season.

Practical information

A Sinai entry stamp from Egypt is sufficient for entry into Jordan via Aqaba - no separate visa is needed. Bring your passport, warm clothing for the overnight coach journey, comfortable walking shoes (Petra involves a lot of walking on uneven stone paths), water, sunscreen, and a snack or lunchbox. Passport photos must be submitted to us in advance to process the paperwork.
