🤿 How to choose a snorkelling mask

📅 24 February 2026 ⏱ 3 min read

The mask is the most important piece of snorkelling kit. If it doesn't fit - leaks, digs in, slips off - you'll miss half the experience. Here's how to get it right. 🐠

1️⃣ Try it on without the strap

Don't put the strap on your head just yet. Simply press the mask against your face and hold it gently. 👌

2️⃣ The seal test

Take a gentle breath in through your nose and tilt your head forward.

👉 If the mask stays in place - it fits you ✅

👉 If it falls off - move on ❌

3️⃣ Check the seal

The mask should sit snugly but comfortably against your face all the way round.

❌ No gaps anywhere

❌ No pressure or discomfort

4️⃣ Face shape matters

Everyone's face is different, so there's no such thing as a 'universal' mask. 🙅 Even an expensive mask might simply not suit you.

5️⃣ Air test

If you feel any air passing through, water will get in when you're in the sea. That mask won't work for you. 💧

6️⃣ Comfort first

You'll be swimming and watching fish 🐠 - so the mask needs to be comfortable, not pressing and not slipping.

7️⃣ Take your time

It's worth trying a few different masks and choosing the one that fits perfectly. ⏱

💡 SunTrip tip: equipment hire is available on our yachts and boats at $5 per item. But if you snorkel regularly - it's worth buying your own mask in Sharm for $10-15. It pays for itself quickly.
