Just landed in Sharm El Sheikh and want to get connected straight away? Buying a local SIM card is simpler than you'd expect. Here's a step-by-step guide that will save you time and money.
Once you've collected your luggage and cleared customs, don't rush to leave the terminal. In the arrivals hall you'll find official counters for the two largest Egyptian mobile operators: Vodafone Egypt and Orange Egypt. Both offer tourist packages with data, calls and SMS. The counters are open around the clock and staff will help you in English.
There's also a counter for Etisalat (e&), but its coverage in Sharm's tourist areas is slightly weaker than the other two. We recommend Vodafone Egypt as the most reliable option, with strong coverage at hotels, beaches and on excursions.
Before your trip, download the operator's app (Vodafone Egypt or Orange Egypt) to your smartphone. This lets you quickly activate your SIM, check your balance and top up data without going to a shop. Both apps are available on the App Store and Google Play and are fully available in English.
Also check that your phone is unlocked and supports Egyptian frequencies - most modern smartphones do. SIM format: nano-SIM. If you need an adaptor, ask at the counter - they're available free of charge.
When you approach the counter, say straight away that you want a tourist SIM with data. Ask to see a new, sealed package. Check that the number on the packaging matches the number printed on the SIM card itself. This matters, because occasionally already-opened packages are sold.
Tourist packages in 2026 cost around 100-200 EGP (roughly $2-4) and include between 5 and 20 GB of data, valid for 7 to 30 days. Always ask the vendor to confirm the current tariff - prices are updated regularly.
Under Egyptian law all SIM cards must be officially registered against a passport. This takes 2-3 minutes at the counter. The member of staff will note your passport details and photograph the document. Without registration the SIM may work only partially or be blocked. Have your passport ready before you join the queue.
Immediately after purchase, while still at the counter, ask the staff member to help you insert the SIM and confirm that the internet is working. Open a browser or any app and check the connection. Also confirm exactly how many gigabytes are included in your package and when they expire. This saves unpleasant surprises on day two.
Few people know this: the data allowance in Egyptian tourist packages is often split into several portions. For example, 20 GB may be divided into 4 x 5 GB portions that activate automatically. This means that when the first 5 GB is used, the speed won't drop - the next portion kicks in automatically. The system works well, but it sometimes confuses people who think their data has run out.
Make sure you've confirmed all of the following before walking out of the terminal: internet is working, you can send a message, your balance is active, and you can make a call. If anything isn't working, it's much easier to sort out at the counter than in an unfamiliar city.
If your phone supports eSIM, you can buy an Egyptian eSIM online before you travel and activate it as soon as you land. This is handy if you want to skip the queue. However, a physical SIM bought at the airport is typically cheaper and usually includes more data.
